Although David Lynch is mostly known for being a film director, his true passion has always been painting—creating scenes as dark and esoteric as his work in film. As an art student in the ‘60s at the Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts, he drew inspiration from the “fear, insanity, corruption, filth, despair, violence in the air” he experienced in Philadelphia and reflected these themes in his hybrid works of sculpture, painting, collage and installation.

David Lynch: The Unified Field is the first major exhibition of his works, spanning from 1965 to today, with many pieces on display for the first time since he created them as a student. Lynch was frank and unapologetic at his Q & A with the press before the opening of his show on September 13th and stated that he would be spending the week in the city, bemoaning the ubiquitous graffiti and lack of soot on our buildings.
