Art Phag: Judith Schaechter
“I just started imagining what it would be like to be a prisoner in one of these cells and my first thought was that birds and the weather would be just about the most important things…The light coming in from the skylights would be highly metaphorical which is pretty much how a church window works. The Abbot Suger said that stained glass was enlightenment embodied.” – Judith Schaechter
Eastern State Penitentiary welcomes Judith Schaechter to its 2012 artist installation program. ‘The Battle of Carnival and Lent’ – 17 stained glass windows – is inspired by the prison’s dark history and will be installed in historic skylights throughout Cellblocks 8, 11, and 14. This work marks Judith Schaechter’s return to Philadelphia after more than ten years exhibiting nationally and internationally. April 1 to November 30, 2012, with an opening reception Friday, May 11.
